In support of its commitment to emerging talent worldwide and the Global Fashion Engagement, Mercedes-Benz is proud to present a new episode of Fashion Creatives starring the sensational Hiplet™ Ballerinas of the Chicago Multicultural Dance Centre. Founder and choreographer of the centre and the Hiplet™ dance form; Homer Bryant whose students include Malia and Sasha Obama is a former principle dancer of the Dance Theatre Harlem.
The whimsical short film, directed by L.A.-based award-winning director Ace Norton, reimagines a night at the museum where the worlds of dance and fashion collide within the futuristic architecture of the Mercedes-Benz museum. As night falls, the security guard closes the showroom filled with classic and never before seen concept cars. Ensuring everything is in its place; he returns to his desk surrounded by security monitors and falls asleep while the mannequins spring to life performing a Hiplet™ dance sequence choreographed by Homer Bryant. Opening with a solo dance performance by Carmryn Hutchinson, she embarks on a journey of exploration spanning the depths of the museum, as she finds her feet; she encounters a male dancer, Devin Buchanan. During their romantically driven dance duet, the remaining mannequin’s rhythmically come to life to create a dance troupe who she later joins forces with. As the dancers find their groove, the security guard suddenly wakes up to see the dancers performing on the museum monitor. Promptly attending to the scene, he finds the dancers returned to their original static form.
Founding The Chicago Multi Cultural Dance Centre in 1985, Homer Bryant fuses the classic ballet pointe technique with hip-hop and urban dance styles to create the contemporary dance form, Hiplet™. The former principle dancer of the Dance Theatre Harlem, Bryant founded the school with a mission to reflect the diversity of dance in both casting and technique.
To enhance Mercedes-Benz Fashion’s growing relationship with emerging creative talent, this humorous film features clothes by New York designer Sandy Liang. A Parsons: The New School alumna, Sandy quickly caught the attention of the fashion elite, adopting model, Soo Joo Park and buyer and stylist, Kate Foley as early supporters of her downtown aesthetic. The mannequins and dancers who feature in the film wear pieces from Sandy’s previous collections with a focus on her Resort 2016 line. She will present her Spring Summer 2017 collection during New York Fashion Week on Sunday 11th September 2016.
